Description:

ConocoPhillips Canada is recruiting a Total Systems Engineer to join our Operations Support & Optimization team. Reporting to the Production Delivery Supervisor, this role will act as a key liaison to the Surmont Asset Management Team (SALT). As the focal point for the infrastructure optimization effort, the successful candidate will be accountable for the following: build organizational clarity of Surmont facility limits in the new operating mode, identify new debottlenecking opportunities, ensure that the strategy applied to debottlenecking Surmont aligns with the broader vision for the asset, and ensure strategies account for uncertainties in reservoir and plant performance.  Through growth of new well pads and maturing existing well pads the Surmont asset is transitioning from being well constrained to plant constraint.  The expectations for Surmont are continued plant constraint going forward and this change in operating condition is a significant opportunity to optimize facility performance.

Stakeholder engagement will be a crucial part of the role, with key stakeholders being Development (Base Exploitation Team, Forecasting, Strategy / Planning), Operations (Process Engineering, Facility Engineering, Production Delivery, Operations).  Success in this role will result in greater organizational awareness day-to-day/long-term facility limits and how facility performance is impacting the production performance of the asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the integrated team in developing a deep understanding of facility constraints including sensitives and uncertainties in both facility operations and subsurface performance.  Objective to build organizational clarity of facility performance by aligning on Process Engineering, Facility Engineering and Operations inputs of facility limits.  Responsible for the assurance of facility limits and potential need to revise based on changes in operating conditions or understanding.
  • Develop plans to derisk facility performance and constraints.  Activities may include developing scope for engineering studies, facility trials, and facility modifications.
  • Establish tool set and documentation of limits for the asset that is representative of the future state of operations.  Responsible for maintaining the documentation and ensuring organizational awareness of limits is clear.
  • Primary liaison with development to ensure operational inputs are understood and appropriately leveraged for reservoir forecasting and development planning evaluations.  Predicting how constraints and requirements in the facility will change as operating conditions change is important. E.g. ability to understand what will happen.
  • Primary liaison with Strategy / Planning on the Debottlenecking strategy to ensure a broad approach that accounts for considerations in multiple time horizons from day-to-day, mid-to-long term.
  • Cost management of OPEX and CAPEX projects and ensure they are represented accurately through the budget and LRP exercises.
  • Champion approval of debottlenecking projects through the FEL gates.  This may include being the lead for the project or identifying a project owner and being accountable to ensure the project is continuing forward at a pace that fits into the broader asset plan.

Qualifications:

  • Engineering Degree and APEGA designation.
  • 10+ years of experience in Surmont and SAGD.
  • Experience in Process Engineering, Facility Engineering, Operations, Reservoir Engineering, Development Planning is valuable but not a must.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions with a multi-functional team that each has specific SME abilities.  Being able to align teams to reach consensus and communicate their feedback concisely.
  • Commitment to functional excellence and strong technical documentation for future reference.
