Job Summary
Bakken OverviewThe Bakken trend is a sequence of liquids-rich sand and shale layers in the Williston Basin, which stretches across western North Dakota and into Canada. The company’s position in the Bakken development area is comprised of approximately 562,000 net unconventional acres, which include 382,000 net mineral acres and 180,000 net leasehold acres. The company focuses on unconventional tight-oil play development and production in the most prolific portion of the basin.
During 2023, net production averaged 106 MBOED. There were 37 operated wells brought online during 2023, bringing the total to more than 850 operated wells online at year-end.
Position Overview
This is an asset field environmental engineer position for the Lower 48 Environmental Field Operations organization. We work together with other members of the Environmental Team, S&OH Team, IT, Operations, Maintenance, Wells, Engineering, Land, and Legal organizations to develop compliance tools and implement environmental compliance programs that contribute to sustainable development and maintaining a zero-incident culture. At ConocoPhillips, as a team member or working independently, multifaceted environmental-related tasks will be executed in support of operational needs for the Bakken assets.
This role supports the Bakken asset, managing environmental related issues at the field level such as release reporting and closures. SPCC assessment and compliance, waste and NORM management requirements, biodiversity awareness and reporting, and supports all other environmental needs at the asset level.

Your responsibilities may include:
- Demonstrate leadership on all environmental matters pertaining to the asset
- Independently manage day-to-day environmental issues impacting the asset
- Be the primary interface for environmental issues with operational functions, including Production, Wells, Projects and Maintenance organizations
- Develop solutions for changing regulatory environments at the state and local level and advise on technical standards; Engage in the review and roll out of procedures related to environmental issues; Provide environmental training to operations & engineering
- Provide environmental technical knowledge and training to operational functions, including Production, Wells, Projects and Maintenance Organizations, in Waste and NORM management; biodiversity awareness; reporting requirements; closure on deferred spills; and SPCC compliance
- Capture, maintain, and analyze datasets for the purposes of estimating release volumes, waste volumes, and process safety metrics classification. Coordinate with supervision to develop tools that can be used to inform the workforce of emerging trends
- Interface with external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, landowners, and tribal organizations, on environmental matters
- As requested, support air permitting and other required environmental compliance and reporting for sites in the asset
- Provide environmental expertise during emergency response activities, including agency notifications, initial delineation, initial response and remediation; Contribute during environmental incident investigations and, internal and external audits and proactively implementing takeaways to prevent similar incidents or findings

Basic/Required:
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Current/valid driver's license
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Environmental, Chemical, Petroleum, Civil Engineering, other related engineering field, or foreign equivalent
- 3 or more years of experience as an Environmental Professional in the oil and gas industry
- Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to travel 10% of the time on a yearly basis
Preferred:
- 5 or more years of experience as an Environmental Professional in the oil and gas industry
- 1 or more years of experience as an Environmental Professional, supporting assets on Tribal lands in North Dakota
- Ability to interact with engineering and maintenance on operational issues related to environmental emissions and releases
- Ability to network and gain agreement from members of operations, maintenance, and other workgroups
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and with competing deadlines
- Demonstrates knowledge about process operations that contribute to spills and other environmental releases
- Exhibits expertise in waste management regulations, requirements and practices in the oil and gas industry, including knowledge of RCRA and applicable state regulations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills needed to work with multiple clients
- Showcases leadership and dedication to champion a zero-incident culture
- Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what's right
- Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
