Job Summary

The Head of Market Analysis – Global Crude is responsible for the development of regional and global market views for the crude trading business. This role is responsible for developing global market view for crude, leading a team of analysts in producing fundamental forecasts, scenario models, and tradeable insights that inform positioning, pricing, and benchmark spread strategies. As the global crude lead, the role ensures consistent methodology, commercial relevance, and timely delivery of analytics aligned to trading objectives.

Position Overview

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Own end-to-end responsibility for the accuracy, depth, and commercial relevance of crude oil market analysis across regional and global markets
  • Lead the team in developing robust short- and medium-term supply-demand balances, with full geographic resolution including understanding each region’s unique role and how these dynamics influence market behavior
  • Ensure the team maintains comprehensive modeling across all key trading tenors (BOM, M1, M1–M2, Quarterlies, Calendar Year), and can evaluate risks such as terminal congestion, refinery outages, and project-driven volatility
  • Oversee the team’s analysis of key crude basis relationships and ensure a continuous read on global competitiveness, export arbitrage, regional congestion, and refiner slate economics
  • Guide analysts in structuring and evolving models around all major global crude benchmarks (WTI, Brent, MEH, WCS, MARS, Dubai/Oman, etc.), ensuring consistency of methodology and quality of inputs
  • Require and verify that the team models and interprets fundamentals across the full crude value chain
  • Provide input into Chief Economist Office annual long term price forecasts
  • Accountable for ensuring that all team outputs align with trader priorities and are delivered in a commercially actionable format
  • Responsible for direct line management of North American analysts, with functional leadership of crude analytics globally
  • Define and evolve commodity-specific methodologies, models, and tools; ensure best practices are codified and scalable
  • Embed deep subject matter expertise across the team and broader business through knowledge sharing, coaching, and analyst development
  • Drive alignment on global crude analytics priorities, ensuring consistency and commercial relevance across regional teams
  • Act as the global crude thought leader, shaping the analytical narrative and driving scenario-based forecasting used to inform trading strategy
  • Align team workflows with broader analytics standards, contributing to the adoption of best practices in methodology, reporting, and internal collaboration
  • Partner with regional traders and commercial leads to integrate analytics into position-taking, origination, and risk management, ensuring insights are both timely and actionable
  • Translate market movements, policy changes, and structural shifts into clear implications for trading, providing ongoing feedback to adjust strategy and exposures.
  • Clearly communicate market insights and trends to senior traders and management, highlighting the potential impact of supply-demand shifts on trading positions
  • Ensure the crude team effectively uses global data management platforms (e.g., Snowflake), continuously identifying opportunities for workflow automation and digital enhancement
  • Collaborate with the Head of Trading Analytics and digital teams to evolve model architecture, streamline reporting, and strengthen integration with trading systems
  • Coordinate with cross-bench, Gas & Power, LNG, and other macro analytics teams to ensure alignment on market assumptions, geopolitical developments, and global fundamental dynamics

Basic/Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, other related field or foreign equivalent
  • 7 or more years of experience in market analysis, trading analytics, or commodity research
  • 3 or more years or experience managing analytical teams and working directly with trading leadership.
  • 3 or more years of experience on a trading floor in market analysis or trading analytics
  • Advanced level of knowledge of North American crude dynamics and global market linkages in crude

Preferred:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Crude fundamentals: Deep expertise in crude oil supply-demand drivers, including regional balances, global trade flows, storage, refining, and upstream production
  • Market economics & price formation: Strong understanding of price behavior, margin structures, arbitrage mechanics, and the interaction of market participants across the physical and paper value chain
  • Modeling & forecasting: Proven ability to build, interpret, and guide high-impact models; capable of turning complex data into clear strategic narratives and actionable insights
  • Trading literacy: Solid grasp of trading concepts such as time spreads, basis, optionality, and risk/reward tradeoffs in physical and financial markets
  • Commercial mindset: Strong business instincts and a track record of driving value through insight generation, model development, and market engagement
  • Stakeholder engagement: Able to influence and collaborate with traders, analysts, and global teams while managing regional priorities and ensuring alignment with firmwide views
  • Operational fluency: Functional understanding of refinery configurations, coker economics, upstream supply constraints, and how they feed into short-term S&D volatility
  • Execution under pressure: Comfortable leading in high-tempo environments with tight deadlines and high expectations for speed, accuracy, and strategic impact
  • Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
  • Analyzes stakeholder needs, global, political, and market trends to understand how they shape the future and impact business results
  • Drives thoughtful and pragmatic change, encourages innovative thinking and continuous improvement, and models adaptability through resourcefulness, flexibility and positivity
