I joined ConocoPhillips two years after I left Leeds university. I had already worked on offshore projects for the company as a geotechnical consultant brought into work on offshore installation foundation design. In this role I noticed the collaborative yet solutions focused work ethic of ConocoPhillips and the supportive way the company interacted with contractors. When I decided to shift my career away from geosciences towards a more commercial role, ConocoPhillips was therefore the first company I looked at. After gaining a place on ConocoPhillips’ Finance graduate recruitment scheme, over three years I studied for and gained my ICAS Chartered Accountancy qualification whilst every 6-9 months rotating through the UK offices we owned at the time in Warwick, Aberdeen and London. I gained a lot of exposure to our upstream business analysis, treasury, downstream marketing and commercial accounting functions in a short space of time while studying hard for my exams.
My work with ConocoPhillips
I am currently Manager, Long Term Gas Contracts. This is a role supporting our Norwegian natural gas portfolio. My responsibility is to ensure our focus on customers, ensure properly negotiated and functioning contracts and to resolve contract disputes. As the gas markets have evolved I also work closely with our gas marketing team to ensure we have optimal trading strategies for assets. Although I am based in London, I travel frequently to Norway. Where circumstances allow I’ve also been involved in various business development projects, some relating to mergers and acquisitions, other projects involving travel to the Far East. Over my career to date I have developed expertise in global gas markets and functional expertise in commercial negotiation, analytics and optimization.
ConocoPhillips has a well developed talent management process. This has hugely influenced my career and given me opportunities to work in a diverse range of disciplines from accounting, market analysis, negotiation, macro-economic analysis and upstream assessment management. I’ve been privileged to have a new and interesting role every 2-3 years on average and have lived in Scotland, Norway and the US. This has meant that over the 15 years I have been with ConocoPhillips, there has never been a dull moment and together with a young family, have been able to experience at first hand different cultures and travel together. Now I have kids starting secondary school, I’ve let the company know we would like some more stability. I now plan on being based in our London office for some time, a decision I have made with the support of our management team both locally and in the US.
Although I don’t know exactly what my next role will look like given my desire to stay in London, I’d really like to continue to develop my expertise in the global gas markets. Increasingly I am looking at ways I can help support the business to identify and execute new business opportunities so that we continue to have a thriving and successful commercial business in London in the long term.
